FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: FOR TUTORS
What grades can I tutor for?
OST offers tutoring for students in the Livingston Public School District from Grades 6-12.
What subjects can I tutor in?
Tutors can teach in academic subjects, electives, visual arts/music/theater, standardized tests, and extracurricular competitions (ex: AMC, Olympiad competitions).
What should I charge for tutoring?
Tutoring is free on school property (only for high school students). Otherwise, tutors can charge a small fee.
Please note, tutors should not be charging over $30 for their services. Typical pricing is between $20-30 per hour, for both in-person AND online tutoring. Pricing is also dependent on the difficulty of the subject. For example, it wouldn't be reasonable to charge $30 for Spanish 1 CP.
Where and when should I tutor?
High school students can be tutored during school hours in the media center or at a mutually agreed location. They can also be tutored after school hours or on weekends at a mutually agreed location. Middle schoolers can only be tutored after school hours or on weekends at a mutually agreed location. If tutoring takes place in a student's home, we encourage a parent or guardian to be home while tutoring is taking place.
What if I can't meet my tutee in person?
We offer the option of online tutoring (ex: video chat or phone call, Google Doc editing). Specific methods depend on your subject and should be coordinated with your respective tutee. Please specify in the application whether you would like to offer online tutoring, in-person, or both.
How does the process work?
In order to tutor, you must first complete a form under the "Applications" tab at the top of the page. The Co-Presidents will process your application, evaluating your qualifications, and pair you with an appropriate student. We will send you their basic information and we'll give you five days to contact them. Please reply to our email to let us know if/when you've made contact with your tutee. The entire process should take no longer than two weeks. If you do not hear back from your tutee within two weeks, please contact us.
What’s special about me being an OST tutor?
As high school students, OST tutors have firsthand experience with the high school, having taken the same courses with the same teachers, and are able to share their experiences and even help with study habits.
What if my tutee / tutee's parents keep wanting me to take on more responsibilities than necessary?
You are a high school student, with your own pursuits (and workload!) and cannot dedicate all of your time to your tutee. If a parent wants their child to meet three or more times a week, asks you to speak with your tutee's teachers, or asks you to do other extraneous responsibilities beyond the job of a student tutor, please let us know.
What if my tutee doesn't need me anymore? Can I be paired with a new student?
Yes! Please fill out the form under the Update Form tab for tutors to let us know.
