FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: FOR TUTEES (LOOKING FOR A TUTOR)
What grades does OST offer tutoring for?
OST offers tutoring for students in the Livingston Public School District from Grades 6-12.
What subjects can my son/daughter be tutored in?
Tutors can teach in academic subjects, electives, visual arts/music/theater, standardized tests, and extracurricular competitions (ex: AMC, Olympiad competitions).
Is there a fee for tutoring?
Tutoring is free on school property (only for high school students). Otherwise, tutors will typically charge a small fee. Tutors are given a guideline for how to charge. If you feel your tutor is charging too much, please contact us!
Please note, the tutors should not be charging over $30 for their services. Typical pricing is between $20-30 per hour, for both in-person AND online tutoring. Pricing is also dependent on the difficulty of the subject.
Where and when can my son/daughter be tutored?
High school students can be tutored during school hours in the media center or at a mutually agreed location. They can also be tutored after school hours or on weekends at a mutually agreed location. Middle schoolers can only be tutored after school hours or on weekends at a mutually agreed location. If tutoring takes place in a student's home, we encourage a parent or guardian to be home while tutoring is taking place.
What if I can't meet a tutor in person?
We offer the option of online tutoring (ex: video chat or phone call, Google Doc editing). Specific methods depend on your subject and should be coordinated with your respective tutor. Please specify in the application whether you would like online tutoring, in-person, or both.
Are my student’s grades kept confidential?
Yes. Your student’s grades are only seen by the current Co-Presidents to determine the best-fit tutor for your student. The tutor is not given this information unless we are given explicit consent to tell him/her or you tell him/her yourself.
How does the process work?
In order for your child to receive tutoring, you must first complete a form under the "Applications" tab at the top of the page. The Co-Presidents will process your application, evaluating your child’s needs, and will pair your child with his or her best-fit tutor. The tutor is then sent your child’s basic information and is given five days to contact you. The entire process should take no longer than two weeks. If you do not hear back within two weeks, please contact us.
What’s special about OST tutors?
As high school students, OST tutors have firsthand experience with the high school, having taken the same courses with the same teachers, and are able to share their experiences and even help with study habits.
Should I find a professional tutor? Or go with OST?
Please keep in mind that our tutors are all high school students. Although our tutors are all qualified and maintain high grades, there may be times a student tutor is not the best fit for your child’s needs. Please keep in mind that our tutors have their own pursuits (and workload!) and cannot dedicate their entire time to your child. If you are searching for a tutor to meet three or more times a week, you may want to consider finding a professional tutor instead.
How do I apply for my child?
Go to the "Applications" tab on our website, click on the “Apply for a tutor” link, and complete the application! You can include your preferences in this form.
What if things don't work out with my tutor? Can I be paired with a new tutor?
Yes! Please fill out the form under the Update Form tab for tutees to let us know.
